As with Brexit, there are sizeable chunks of various beliefs all coordinated into one "movement", for example many people who actually believe that they're being told what to do and think all the time. If you tell them they're not, they assume somehow it's you that's been brainwashed. That's the victory of propaganda, I suppose.
