Look at the governments we have. It requires more taxation, and since Thatcher/Reagan it has become a matter of faith among Tories/Republicans that taxation is somehow evil and not crucial for social justice.
Wanting to retain your manufacturing and voting for right-wing governments must pretty much be a definition of idiocy, so frankly they deserve all they get.
