There's also a moral question, in my view.
Deliberately diverting society's best resources to those who can pass an exam at 11, in my opinion, is questionable. I know it's the way of the world that some people are more successful than others, but isn't it our responsibility to make sure things are shared fairly, particularly in (state-sponsored, if that still exists) education?
