That made me think of Kerry-Bush, just a little
By any analysis, Kerry destroyed Bush on the facts in their debate. But Bush won it in the post-debate polling, because he sounded like "a good guy a bit like me" to enough Americans.
Trump did better than last time, for me. He needed to energise his base after the tape and not get destroyed and he probably achieved both.
Clinton supporters will point to all the many, many straight untruths that Trump told, but the Trump True Believers won't see or care about that.
I thought Trump was petulant at first - all this three-on-one, you-gave-her-more-time stuff in the first half, but backed off that as he grew in confidence and he finished strongly (on his terms).
So on balance, Trump did well. He'll still lose, though.
There's all kinds of scuttlebutt that Pence is pulling out btw, but that may just be twittert**tter.
