Town say adios to Pablo
Ipswich have told striker Pablo Counago he will not be staying at Portman Road - despite his offer to take a drastic cut in salary.
The 25-year-old Spaniard was the last of the Tractor Boys' big earners, picking up £20,000 a week from the contract he signed upon his arrival from Celta Vigo on a four-year deal in 2001.
Counago was keen to stay and knew he would have to take a hefty cut in wages, but boss Joe Royle has told him his services will not be required.
Royle said: "We have told Pablo that he is not in our plans for next season. He came back from pre-season training last summer unfit and never got fully fit. He could not do 90 minutes for us."
The Ipswich boss dismissed suggestions of a vendetta between himself and the player, adding: "We got on fine. I gave him his chance and if you look at the records George Burley very rarely played him. Any talk of me having a vendetta against Pablo is way off the mark and I wish him well in the future."
Counago made a total of 100 league appearances, 49 of them as substitute, and scored 31 goals in his four-year stint with Ipswich.
