Anyone help me regarding self assessment tax return...

basically got to fill out a date for an accounting period. I started self employment on the 6th of August 2004 and my basis period is 06/08/04 ending 05/04/05. Now can my accounting period start before I started working. Say start of the tax year in 2004 (06.04.04), or does it have to be a date which comes on or after I started work. Any help would be appreciated. Tried the self help manuals on the revenues website and it's like deciphiring some sort of ancient text.
