Well I'm no expert obvs but it implied that we had some good individual players but a
rubbish team set up and management Plus Illingworth and Athers hated each other, the selectors kept messing about with their picks so no player ever felt secure and the counties ruled the roost (at least for the first half of the decade).
They made the point though that statistically the 80s were actually worse and stuff that happened in the 90s, led to the successes of the 2000s.
