Hmm ...

I'm inclined to agree with you about Izzy.

Jason Lee is a weird one though - the Chesterfield fans recently voted him their worst-ever player (long after he ditched the haircut). Plenty of players do seem to carry on playing for years at a decent level despite not looking good to anyone (Carl Leaburn, off the top of my head).

Football is a relatively (I stress relatively) black and white thing, compared to (say) pop music - if, for example, a striker continually f**ks up when through on goal, he isn't very good. Watch the Fantasy Football League sketch that ruined Lee's career again and you'll see what I mean.

Most of his career has been played in the lower leagues - he had a brief stint in the top flight and got caught out, much like Akinbiyi or Zamora or Beckford - different attributes get you goals in the lower leagues than in the Prem, and generally these are physical rather than technical ones.

The haircut was a stick to beat Lee with because he played so poorly - Beckham gets away with silly haircuts, and Chris Waddle wasn't destroyed by the stick he took for his (or that song) because he was, actually, pretty skilful.

Of course, there's still plenty of room for opinion - that's what makes it great - but if someone constantly screws up, they're s**t - it's not that hard to spot. Read Nick Hornby's passage on Gus Caesar in 'Fever Pitch', he probably wrote that when he wasn't as tired as I am now, and it explains how and why players are written off by fans much better than I just did ...
