i think what's really happened in the last year is:

Ashton was really hoping to leave Crewe for a bigger team a year ago but as we were the only bidders we convinced him to join us 'just for the rest of the season' with a huge cheque and a promise of a nice chunk of any future transfer fee. Then we couldn't find any buyers for the expected asking price in the summer because everyone knew we were desperate. Ashton offered to buy himself out so he could join man city, but we offered him an either bigger cheque to stay with us 'just until january'. So from the start of the season we were fielding a player whose heart was elsewhere and who was only playing for money.

And that's what they call 'ambition with prudence'.
