FAO Chengde re: Guitars
I'd go with feel over sound anyday. I've bought some guitars in the past that have sounded and looked great, but they've played like an absolute pig (BC Rich Ironbird, Washburn Acoustic, Butterscotch Tele in my younger days). They were all dreadful guitars but looked really nice before playing.
The right sound can be achieved by something even as simple as changing your picks and string gauge, plus the millions of effects pedals and units there are to buy. The style of stuff you're wanting to do, I think the Gibson SG mentioned before is a good shout, or even maybe a Strat as they;re pretty versatile (I'm sure the dude from Mumford and Sons uses an SG live).
Spend ages in the shop trying ones out. I think I was in PMT on Anglia Square about 2 and half hours before settling on my Takamine Acoustic.
ps: I have no idea how long you've been playing so apologies if this is all stuff you know already.
