but he acts differently. The kinder politics didn't last when his authority was challenged - he went back to the same tactics all party leaders have used.

I still think he's a Good Thing, mind - but also that having set out a set of principles on how politics should be run, that he should maybe run his bit of politics according to those principles. Briefing against colleagues, threats and intimidation have always been the Labour way (and the Tory and Lib Dem way too, come to that). Briefly, I thought he might not do that but that's doubtless breathtakingly na?ve of me. Indeed he might not have intended to at first, but that was doubtless breathtakingly na?ve of him too.

Politics by its nature has to be a certain way, I suppose. Democracy is the worst way of running anything apart from all the other ways, to paraphrase Churchill.
