We were struggling with a 7m debt which we just couldn't reduce, were restricted to signing dodgy French second division longshots, one of which Delia paid out of her own pocket, or low-grade loanees. We were more worried about relegation than promotion.
A year ago we gambled 3m on a player few others had the balls to give a chance.
We have made a profit of 3m on that player in less than a year.
Short version: it could have been a lot worse. We could have signed Andy Gray instead of Ashton. Then we'd be in the same league position or lower, and a lot worse off financially.
