I have a new solution to this

Away team chooses who bats first.

2 justifications:
- the home team has control of pitches. Groundsmen would have every incentive to try and produce pitches that were as fair as possible, in the knowledge that the other side will get to make the decision.
- tests series are becoming more and more skewed towards the home teams (eg the Ashes nowadays, or India's away vs home form...). This would redress the balance a tiny bit.

Won't happen though.
