Transfer policy
As a club we have generally been at our best when buying up-and-coming young talent and turning them into top class talent (Reeves, Bruce, Watson etc) or developing ouir own young players (Sutton, Bellamy, Fox, Gordon). The good thing about the Ashton thing is that we bought him as a young player on the way up and his value duly appreciated, strengthening the club's finances even if we have to sell. This is what makes almost all Worthy's other signings so depressing. They are invariably "experienced" pros who are clearly never going to improve (Hughes, Thorne, Robinson, Jarrett, Etuhu, Louis-Jean). If you buy average Championship players who don't have the potential to improve then how are we ever going to be anything more than an average Championship club?? I'd like to see the Ashton money spent on young prospects for once. OK, some might not up to their potential but at least their development (like that of our own young players, if that were to be allowed) will be something I as a fan can get excited about. And its the only way we'll acquire Prem class talent (we can't afford proven Prem class) ands move forward as a club. Worthy's signings are generally as desperately unexciting as is possible - it's as though he knows as long as we sit in mid-table in the Championship his job is safe so he might as well employ a no-risk policy and sit here milking the club. The policy has to change NOW if any sense of excitement and anticipation is to be returned to the fans.
