Yes, it was exactly what people were looking for.......nostalgia.

JJ basically stole all the best bits from the first three movies and rehashed the nostalgia while bringing in new characters to do the same things the old characters did.

I guess people like the familiar/ safe option.

People liked the movie "The Hangover" so they made "Hangover 2" which is basically the same plot/story line as the first one.
