If people can't get positive attention/strokes they settle for negative ones

It's just psychological. A negative stroke is considered better than no stroke at all, and at times the former is much easier to get than a positive equivalent.

Sad really, but it happens. A lot. In all walks of life. Just go down Prince of Wales Road late at night on a Friday/Saturday
