I got the feel that the writers were taking it to an in interestingly dark ending in a jilted-wife-has-mental-breakdown-kills-kid-everybody-loses tradgedy way, but that someone had come along with a "You can't end it like that!! Points of View will be inundated with complains!" and chickened out.
The ending was really really naff and, to be frank, barely credible as an outcome to the story. As Chelts said, it seemed a very rushed piece of writing after all the slow build up that came before it.
