You probably can yeah but that's a hassle and a wire. I mostly use it for

Netflix, YouTube, NFL as far as the Apple TV "apps" go. But I also use AirPlay a lot. Which is basically streaming video from the computer, using my tv as a second monitor, or streaming music to the speakers attached to the tv. Just easier than having to plug it in. Is only 80 quid or something. Nice simple remote too.

The new one can also be used as a games console when the games arrive. And you can use the Siri (voice controlled) remote on the new one in the uk I think. In NL the Dutch Siri isn't ready for it so they deliver a non Siri remote. Another reason for me not to bother with the new one yet.
