Might Sound Silly, But...
Only refund him, if you decide to, once the item has been returned to you, in exactly the same state/condition as it was when sold/dispatched and inform the buyer that is what you expect in exchange for the refund.
Lots of people on eBay are bullied into giving refunds, do so in order to protect their rating and, in doing so, forget to ask for the item to be returned which the buyer then keeps.
If he says no return until he gets the refund, point out no shop or other retailer would give a refund until they get the item back *in good condition* and neither will you. eBay would support you in that as would the law.
Popular eBay tactic.
