Here's an example.

My old company sent a couple of guys over to China to work on an exploration project. They were there to run a drilling program and put in place a safety system and set of safe working procedures.

They went over and starting looking at some of the gear there. It wasn't working correctly so called out some engineers from Aus. What had happened was that the Chinese company had got hold of a couple of rigs, stripped them down to parts and copied them piece by piece and built their own. Only problem was they didn't understand the hydraulics systems and electronics on them so nothing was working properly or safely.

Shortly after our guys were kicked out of China after they had basically just got set up. All our systems were taken and copied and within a month there was a huge accident where a number of people were killed. This came back to our company and the Chinese company involved tried to prosecute our company. An independent investigation was made and it turned out that they had copied all our systems but didn't have any idea of the working principles and a lack of understanding of why we did what we did. Everything had fallen apart at the first hurdle and the Chinese guys on site didn't know what to do.

As such our company had all charges dropped and the Chinese company in question was heavily fined and lost their mining licence. The company folded and popped back up a month later doing the same things again.

It's not going to end well in China at all. Smoke and mirrors...
