Some data nerd has analysed the hacked data, specifically the 5.5m female accounts, to see whether they're real.

Short answer for those that don't want to read the whole thing: only 12k accounts show any signs of activity at all beyond the day they were created. The author's conclusion is that the 20m active male accounts have been paying their subscription to email/message accounts that are almost entirely fake.

?Out of 5.5 million female accounts, roughly zero percent had ever shown any kind of activity at all, after the day they were created. The men?s accounts tell a story of lively engagement with the site, with over 20 million men hopefully looking at their inboxes, and over 10 million of them initiating chats. The women?s accounts show so little activity that they might as well not be there."
