I don't think that's true

I'm sure we could have offered more wages than Bologna for Destro. Likewise, a couple of years ago, I doubt it was wages that meant we couldn't get Biglia, Alderweireld or Quagliarella.

We aren't an attractive proposition for overseas players that have other options (i.e. any decent player with potential). We can compete financially but we lose out on other factors - not a famous club, unknown manager, high chance of getting relegated, backwater location etc... - it's going to make it even harder if we get a reputation for messing around potential signings and pulling out of deals at the last minute.
