Tech advice...I have a Sony laptop at home which is fine but

Am starting to do more and more stuff at work and it's heavy to carry about and my wife needs it at home at times.
Mainly office (word etc) and surfing whilst in theatre for teaching and doing research.
So am torn between iPad and the small laptop/hybrid stuff.
I have office 2013 (?with 365?) but need something that will work across both devices.
I don't know what to get.

Suggestions please.
Ps not very tech savvy compared to you lot!
