I'm quite anal about this.

Photos get copied onto my laptop from the camera. At that point CrashPlan starts automatically backing them up onto the internet.

They're in camera raw format at this point, so while they're backing up (they're about 25MB per photo, and I might do several hundred at once, so the backup can take days) I'll process them, making JPEGs from them. They'll also automatically backup to CrashPlan. once the backup has finished I'll discard any rubbish exposures and lots of near-duplicates, and then write a DVD of all the undiscarded raw and processed photos. Then I copy all of those, again, onto an external hard drive, and then delete the raw photos from my laptop.

That way I've got (much smaller) jpegs kept on the laptop, and backups of the jpegs and the negatives on a hard drive, on a DVD and in the internet.
