I spoke to an ex-Norwich youth player about the kick off thing a couple of years ago. Clubs at this level have done it relentlessly for the last 25 years I have been going to football and I complained about it on Twitter and he replied. Anyway he said that the main idea is the tall striker that the ball is played towards is meant to head it on to the oncoming forward/midfielder. He said the strange thing was that he never saw it work in training either though. It is a very English lower league thing, never seen it in South America that's for sure. I have to admit it is only one of two things that have concerned me since AN's arrival because it is very backward and old school tactic. 99/100 we basically give the ball away at the very start of the game.
