I was reading the posts last night with interest about is it more fun in the Championship
than the Prem and would we mind staying down.
It's very hard to argue with the logic that the Prem is where the money and glamour is. Also, I think we'd all be disappointed not to go up, one way or another, this season. So I can see us feeling very gloomy if that happened.
BUT! From my point of view, the Championship is much more fun to play in. I never looked forward to the matches in the Prem. I'd often clock watch and see if we could get through five minutes at a time without someone scoring against us. I'd be tense all the way through. I never feel that now - I'm looking for us to score, even in the last minutes.
People wisely pointed out that the championship is only fun during seasons like this when we're doing well but soon becomes a drag. I thought I'd see how true that was for me.
So from 95-2001 when we were relegated from the new Prem and slowly came to realise we weren't just 'on loan' to the Endsleigh, we finished between 9th and 16th during those seasons. It felt a very different experience supporting Norwich. There would often be thousands of empty seats in games. Our school would be given tickets to take kids for free - so we could run reward schemes to take the kids on a Saturday. Despite the league finishing places being indifferent to poor, I enjoyed these seasons. I liked the team and singing the Iwan/Paul Mcveigh songs!
2002 Play off finals. Yay!
2003 Finished 8th. There was a buzz about the ground and far more people attending matches.
2004. Finished Top! Brilliant season and SO excited about promotion.
2005 Rubbish season! (Regulated from The Prem. Not one away win all season)
2006 Finished 9th. Still quite positive!
2007- 2009 Finished 16th, 17th and then 22nd (regulated) Three rubbish seasons that completely back up the argument that the Championship can be a soul destroying place.
HOWEVER!
2010 Top of League One! Fab season
2011 Second in Champs - promoted. Fab season
2012-2014 Three nerve wracking seasons in the Prem. some exciting and happy times but SO hard at the end waiting for the inevitable regulation.
2015 Exciting season. Who knows what will happen next? I'd like to think we'll be promoted automatically and Sir Alex will be Paul Lambertish in the Prem.
Whatever happens though, thinking back through the past 20 years or so, I've still generally enjoyed following us in the Championship so will cope if that's what faces us.
(Too many words? Sorry!)
