...I omitted to say you need to change at W4th St to the orange line (BDFM I think), get off at 2nd and Houston or Delancey and Essex. Then you're in the Lower East Side. Sorry (age, alcohol, and so on). But it's a short tube ride and quite nice to get the full experience. Don't believe the hype: the NY subway is safer (in my view) than the Tube. If you want trouble you can find it but if you're just minding your own beeswax you'll be left alone (just like the Tube, really).
