seen a pilot leave the cockpit during a flight of 2 hrs or less. Especially so soon after take off. Was very opportunistic of the co-pilot.

Although if you take that throwaway comment about his responses to the landing procedure being laconic then they are hinting that he had already planned it. Either he knew his pilot was struggling with the old waterworks or had eaten a big old vindaloo the night before, or maybe he was planning to attack the pilot at some stage to crash it, and then just took his opportunity.

That of course we will never know. But my guess is that it was simply opportunistic. Probably had the pilot not left the cockpit, either the co-pilot would have topped himself by a more traditional means at some point soon, or the moment may have passed allowing him to recover a bit from his lowest moment. All extremely sad.

But at the end of the day the airlines will HAVE to do something public in the security area whether it really is useful or not, or they will suffer from a lot of passengers who are already on the edge nerves-wise choosing not to fly if they can use alternatives.
