When my father moved out of his house last year
paid up all the utility accounts and explained that the house would be empty. In the time frame from the move to the final sale of the house after my father died, 'the occupiers' received about six different bills for gas usage. I rang up and explained that no gas had been used, all sorted (although trying to explain that someone who was dead wasn't able to come to the phone themselves) and then another bill would appear. With any kind of random starting reading - obviously hoping that new occupiers would just accept it. It's a big old scam.
