I think people get a bit carried away with all this last-minute bidding guff.
Tricky Hawes's non-patented strategy for ebay bidding:
Step (1): Decide what you think the most you want to pay is.
Step (2): Put in that as a bid.
Step (3): Get on with your life.
Step (4): Check after the auction ends whether you bought it or not.
