Financially, things will get more and more difficult the longer we stay down

If that period goes beyond the parachute payments window, it'll get VERY difficult.

Meanwhile: imagine you were interviewing for the post of Chief Executive of a club which is part of the ruthlessly competitive, dog eat dog industry of football. When asked for your ambition, your vision, your aims, you reply:

"We will have periods of ups and downs. Our average over the last 40 years shows that. We have to be realistic".

What would be the response, do you think?

The aim of this club has to be to grow, to improve, to leave the past behind. But we can't do that by not doing what many other clubs do. If we try and be 'different', we'll just get trampled on; and the last time we tried to be 'different', we ended up only months from administration.
