You hold out your hands in front of you and number your fingers from 1-10
Then you count the number of fingers for which ever number you're multiplying by 9 and bend that finger down. (eg 3x9 means fold down the middle finger of your left hand). Any fingers to the left of the bent finger are tens (eg two so 20) and any fingers to the right - count both hands- are units (7) Thus 27!
All the digits in the multiples of 9 add up to 9 too.
