Re Winter tyres down there vvv

I love skiing so our main yearly holiday is usually a drive to the Alps. Winter tyres are essential insurance-wise in Germany and Austria and recommended in France and Italy. They make (apparently) a difference below 7c and I've driven up mountain roads on packed snow with no chains - just the tyres were good enough. This year I had them on a BMW (rear wheel drive - used to have an Audi A3) and had no problems navigating a steep icy road downhill. I was a bit nervous but it was fine.

What I do is put them on the car early December or late November and take them off before Easter, depending on weather. They do wear faster than normal tyres but one advantage is your summer tyres aren't used for four months so they last longer. Winter here obviously isn't Germany and Austria cold but it's frequently cold enough. They're also good in mud, the M + S on the side stands for mud and snow. So I would definitely use them in Scotland. Maybe wouldn't if I stayed in Norfolk for the winter though, all told.
