that can be the way it is.... but our model is

different as we are an agency who get outsourced production from several of the big london agencies. So we give our associates a brief and a number of hours and they get paid for those hours. Any additional work is costed and allocated in the same way so the associates always get paid, and promptly.
When I worked as an associate for them I used to get paid two hours after I put in my invoice!

But yes Freelancing can be a pain (mainly due to clients) - the trick I used to find was to absolutely nail down the brief at the start - no grey areas. A lot more work at the beginning of the job but pays off over time.
