NYC tips
- Top of the Rock > Empire State, and you only need to go up one
- free and worth seeing: Grand Central station, Central Park (worth a day in any season for me, your mileage may vary, it's one of my favourite places on Earth)
- 9/11 memorial is stunningly well done, don't miss it
- Statue of Liberty is a pain to get to, if you want you can just get the (free) Staten Island ferry and you sail fairly close to it, then either just stay on the boat or get the next (free) ferry back
- Times Square is neither square nor anything to do with the Times
- MOMA, Met, Guggenheim - pick one or do all
- sheesh. Loads. Just loads. Google it all. Defo have a ride on the subway Just Because. Also ride a yellow cab - be prepared to explain the grid system to the driver who may not understand it (the fact you've never been and only just arrived and he's into his third month on the job notwithstanding. It's a Rite Of Passage).
- Walk into Penn Station, go "the other end" from where you walk in (if you walk in the usual way), get yourself tickets on the train to DC, much cheaper and less hassle than flying. Acela Express is fastest, local trains 30-60 mins long but much cheaper.
- DC: monuments is a good day, Smithsonian/take your pick of museums (space one is really good), the CIA museum is *well* worth a visit and is a good half-day.
If I'd not been and was spending ten days I'd think about maybe seven in NYC and three in DC, leaving on the last day (train back to Penn then you can just go from there direct to JFK, get the train to Jamaica Station and the airtrain from Jamaica Station to the bit where you take off from).
I know NYC quite well so if you want any more detailed thingies just wink suggestively at me.
