yes, they probably do like him - he seems a fairly likeable bloke

but that doesn't necessarily mean that they respect him as a manager or that they respect his methods.

If I was working under a manger at a company where I only planned to stay for a couple of years, I would prefer someone who wouldn't criticise, even after I'd done something really s**t or was just slacking around. Much more pleasant than a confident, experienced manager, who was secure in his position, giving you a bollocking. The latter would probably make you work harder though.
