'nanny-state' is one of those right-wing insults which has no basis in reality, but which the Daily Mail and chums have managed to lodge in people's consciousness just by repeating it a lot.

Of course, the people using it are probably the same people getting all agitated about youths running wild drunk on our streets something must be done about it this government's too soft etc etc etc etc.....
