Nope you can get ones what do Wifi too. Think about it. You have your router somewhere and
a thick wall between it and the place you are trying to extend to.
Where are you going to put the extender in order to reach that area ? Its signal will also suffer from that wall. So, you plug in the "base station" and connect it to the router, then plug in the extender in the room with the thick wall which will transmit the signal there.
That's how you bypass the wall.
