It is a known scam. He might be contacted and told to send it to an address or be told they will collect it from him. They will say that they sent it to him by mistake.

He may later get the real owners contacting him wanting their money or their goods back but he will have already sent it to the scammers.

If he didn't sign for it then nobody has proof that he has it. If he did sign for it then he could say that a relative has taken it to a police station.

Oh and watch out for any hidden tracking aps on the mobile cos they could use it to see when he was out of the house etc.
