He'd almost certainly have died younger if he hadn't kept fit. But will all these things there are no guarantees - you can only load the dice in your favour. My granddad smoked like a chimney and died at 89 (of something non-smoking related); my nana smoked too and died at 97 (also of something non-smoking related). But that doesn't mean smoking won't kill you. My schoolfriend was dead at 40 from smoking, for example.
Running loads the dice in your favour, and the point of the article is that even a little bit of quite slow running does that. It's not a guarantee of immortality, though - one of those has yet to be invented. Except by the Bilderberg freemason illuminati who secretly control everything, of course.
