We did the same as Bravo - cottages (esp. out of season) are cheaper than other places
around the UK.
I would avoid Amble - you'll be lucky to find anything luxurious.
IMO Bamburgh is the most up-market village on the coast. Not stayed here but seen it from the outside many times - looks just what you want...

Last time we went up there we stayed in Embleton. Decent central base for visiting places. 10mins walk from the beach - half an hour walk to the Ship Inn I was waffling about earlier.
We stayed here. It's a new build made to look old. All the basics and very clean inside...

I'd agree with Bravo though, book a cottage, save money on accommodation and eat/drink more!
