My mate was Father Christmas at the turning on of the High Wycombe lights
Total f**king disaster. He was meant to be in the parade before the "Switch on", sitting in a sledge pulled by reindeer and next to Todd Carthy (Mark from Eastenders).
He got lost on the way there - dressed as Santa natch - spent 10 minutes on the Wycombe footy team bus by mistake before being kicked off. He then found the parade and his "sledge" turned out to be a BMW convertable. Todd Carthy then rang to cancel - couldn't be arsed apparently - so my mate set off in the beamer, waving at the crowds.
His driver then got lost, leaving my mate to fight his way through 200 yards of packed revellers to get onto the stage where the lights were due to be turned on. As he arrived, he put one foot on the stage and there was a huge flash and cheer...they'd got fed up waiting for him and the local councillor turned them on. Basil Brush would have done it - he was on stage too - but his paws couldn't press the button.
Then imagine his surprise when this appeared in the Wycombe Star...
