Technical help needed with acrobat

I'm trying to make a PDF from a word document by printing using acrobat distiller or cutepdf. It works fine, unless i have a greyscale image in it, in which case the job fails, giving me an ioerror (offending command: image). If i change the image to black and white it works, but i lose too much detail in the picture. How can i get this to work?

I've tried turning all the compression off but it still fails!
