I like the idea of a DoF but it would make the manager role redundant

the manager would then be the head coach that follows the philosophy and direction of the DoF. Most managers now wouldn't accept this lack of power, so you would need a good coach that does all the day to day stuff and preparation of the 1st team and maybe an experience old head to be DoF in charge of transfers, club football philosophy at all levels and a football man on the board. It would lead to greater stability if the DoF remains in place as managers come and go. It doesn't work in this country because managers see head coach as a step down and DoF as a step away from football.
