they demand a change, then when the change doesn't work they say the manager should have ignored them. He can't win either way.

The change to an attacking formation away from home was referenced by McNally in his interview in February, when he said it was what the fans wanted. So that was obviously the impression that the board (and presumably Hughton) had.
