Agree, BUT

isn't that more of an indictment against the current state of play and the club's current (seeming) lack of ambition?

I quite enjoyed our first season up, we seemed to be wanting to compete against the big teams. I get the impression that, whatever the Board may have been targetting, Lambert wasn't only aiming for 17th position (c.f the current regime, which does seem to only really have that as its target?).

So I guess I'm in the 'Championship might not be so bad' camp if all we're ever going to do is just aim for survival. But if we actually set out to give it a go more - and we have the nucleus of a club that is very capable of doing that - I'd much rather be at the top table.

If we go down this season it will be very much a lost opportunity and even if we scrambled back up in future years, I doubt we'll ever have such a good opportunity to build on as we have/had this season. The bottom 10 won't be this dross again in the future, and this season's survivors will be able to re-build in a way that we and the aspiring Champsionship clubs wouldn't be able to.
