so you're moving that joint quite harshly in every stride

Your big toe joint in the walking movement, is handling twice your bodyweight when it's in motion, which is why it's attributed to people who are weight baring

A running shoe will have a lot of cushioning, and at the front will arch up, thus being comfortable, and almost in a rocking horse motion, will reduce the pressure on the joint by doing most of the work (as described, like a rocking horse)

The 10% gel is your saviour at the moment though
