This bid for Ranocchia... aren't aiming a bit high?

Of course it's good to show some ambition, but I can't help but think we're being a bit unrealistic with some of our targets? The same goes for Quagliarella and Alderweireld in the summer - I wonder how much time and resource went into pursuing these players who always seemed unlikely to want to come here, at least not when we're scrapping around the mid-lower Prem places without European football. Just look at Alderweireld - he ended up going to Atletico who are second in La Liga! Teams like West Brom and Swansea seem to have thrived by earmarking more modest targets and without any marquee signings (Anelka aside, though he was free and relatively low-risk). This isn't a fully-fledged criticism, I just think it's looks a bit stupid when we're linked with players like Ranocchia who dismiss us out of hand.
