There's nothing all that hazardous in drilling fluids anymore,

It's all mostly biodegradable chemicals and additives that are used in shale gas drilling these days (In QLD at least). There's only a couple of things that mean that drilling fluids need to be treated but that's mainly so they can be re-used, much in the same way sewage is treated.
