I'm not sure they knew. I sadly had a brother who died of cancer at the age of six.

I was only four at the time so was only vaguely aware at the time but I know medical officials probed dad about this visit when Michael was diagnosed - perhaps they somehow thought there was a link? I know it devastated my dad to think there might have been.

It does seem odd looking at the pictures to see them driving around in open top jeeps, wearing shorts and thinking it was only a few weeks after it happened.

In the late 70s/early 80s, I was hugely into CND. I remember arguing with dad for not agreeing with me. I couldn't understand how he couldn't having seen what he'd seen. But the boat had gone from Nagasaki to pick up survivors of the Japanese prisoner of war camps and struggled to forgive the Japanese. I think his feelings were all mixed up with that.

War is rubbish really, isn't it?
